A man claiming to be a former inmate of a jail in Afghanistan’s Lashkar Gah said he and other prisoners were released after the Taliban took over the city. He was seen greeted by friends and relatives waving the white flags of the group at the Chaman border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan on Saturday.
Lashkar Gah is one of the provincial capitals that were seized in Taliban’s swift offensive earlier in the week.
“I was imprisoned at Lashkar Gah for three years and six months. There was cruelty and hardship. There was oppression on the part of the Afghan government,” said Saifullah and added, “I am very happy that the government of the Islamic Emirate has come.”
The recent Taliban offensive has been triggered by the US and other NATO forces’ ongoing withdrawal from the country.
President Joe Biden announced earlier in July that all US troops were to withdraw from Afghanistan by August 31, just before the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
