Crowds could be seen outside a hospital in Karachi on Wednesday, as medical institutions are reaching capacity amid the alarming spread of the Delta variant.
Businesses padlocked their establishments as the government has implemented another lockdown in the country.
One business owner understood the measures taken but expressed how it will affect his work. “Lockdown has been implemented but for daily wagers, it creates problems. With markets closed, everyday businesses get affected and that is directly linked to people like us,” he stated.
Pakistan’s daily COVID-19 case numbers climbed past 4,000 for the first time in two months Wednesday morning after the National Command and Operation Centre reported 4,119 new infections.
The country last recorded over 4,000 cases in a single day on May 22.
SOT, Muhammad Khalid, Shopkeeper (Urdu): “God Almighty will take care of us. Lockdown has been implemented but for daily wagers, it creates problems. With markets closed, everyday businesses get affected and that is directly linked to people like us. Someone who earns on daily basis, he is the one who has to face the music.”
SOT, Irfan Ahmad, Shopkeeper (Urdu): “The government decided to implement a lockdown after the Delta variant reached Karachi. We have seen a drastic rise in the number of patients in hospitals, that is why lockdown is imposed.”
