Pakistan: Thousands join protest against inflation, unemployment in Karachi

Thousands of activists from the opposition Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) gathered in Karachi on Friday, to protest surging inflation and unemployment rates in the country.
Demonstrators were seen waving flags from various political parties, including Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), as well as shouting slogans denouncing what they see as the current government’s role in the rise of inflation.
Sindh General Secretary Maulana Rashid Soomro accused Prime Minister Imran Khan of being ‘incompetent’, stating, “He’s a puppet. He has no sense of running the country. He will ruin the country.”
Similar demonstrations took place throughout the country, including in the cities of Lahore, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Chaman and Mohmand.

SOT, Maulana Rashid Soomro, Sindh General Secretary (Urdu): “We have been saying since day one that he’s (Prime Minister Imran Khan) incompetent. He’s incompetent. He’s a puppet. He has no sense of running the country. He will ruin the country. At that time no one was listening to us. Today, three years later, even children are saying that he is incompetent.”

SOT, Aslam Ghauri, JUI-F spokesperson (Urdu): “The country is in chaos at the moment. Inflation has depressed people. People are committing mass suicides. Unemployment is at peak. People’s shops, businesses are being shut down because of Covid-19. Houses are being demolished. People’s offices are being demolished. Thousands of people were made unemployed in the same Empress Market.”
