Thousands of pilgrims participated in a symbolic procession in Karachi on Tuesday to commemorate the Arbaeen procession, the largest annual pilgrimage in the world.

Worshippers gathered on the streets wearing black clothes and carrying themed flags. Some locals were seen pounding their chests, a symbolic act that is also practiced in other Shiite circles. The pilgrims then paused for prayers on the street before marching again while chanting, with army officers guarding the event.

The ritual, observed only by Shiite Muslims, usually starts in the city of Najaf in Iraq, which is where Imam Hussein’s father Imam Ali’s shrine is located, with participants also wearing black clothes before setting out on a symbolic 80-kilometre walk to the holy city of Karbala that houses Imam Hussein’s shrine.

The procession is called ‘Al-Arbaeen’ or ‘the 40th’ in Arabic, as it happens on the 40th day following the anniversary of Imam Hussein’s martyrdom.
