Paraguay: Paraguay River hits critical decline level

The level of the Rio Paraguay or the Paraguay River, a major river in south America, is facing one of its stiffest declines as seen in Asuncion on Friday.

Despite gaining four centimetres in the past 24 hours, the river reportedly remains at - 0,71 metres below hydrological zero. The water level reached - 0.75 metres earlier this week, according to estimates from the port of Asuncion, with the number being the lowest measurement recorded since 1904. Such a decline might cause trade and delivery disruptions among other issues.

Rains are expected in the end of October and are thought to improve the water level in the river.

SOT, Felipe Duarte, Fisherman (Spanish): “It is not normal, because it is the first time the river goes down in this way. Whenever the river rises, we have fish, but it has not risen or flooded for a long time.”
