US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi was awarded the first-ever ‘Women for Peace and Security’ prize by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly held in Lisbon on Monday.
Pelosi gave a speech after receiving the award, insisting that NATO’s presence in Afghanistan had ensured that a whole generation of women and girls had received an education.
“We cannot ever forget them [the women and girls of Afghanistan], and I want to salute NATO because the NATO alliance was so instrumental for having a whole generation, 20 years of women and girls, to receive educations that they would have never received without the NATO presence, the allies, the alliances in Afghanistan. Now we cannot, we cannot let that go, slip away. We must keep our focus there, keep these women close to our hearts as we go forward because it’s not just about the women. It is about what it means for Afghanistan. It is not just about Afghanistan. It is what it means about security in the world,” stated Pelosi during the speech.
The 67th NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which began on Friday, has brought together lawmakers from 30 NATO member states to discuss important security issues together on the ground and partly remotely.

SOT, Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives: “It is with great humility and pride that I accept this inaugural Women for Peace and Security Award. I do so with deep appreciation of the contribution of NATO to advancing gender equality in the arena of peace and security. So thank you so much. I’m very honoured to receive this.”

SOT, Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives: “So, we cannot ever forget them [the women and girls of Afghanistan], and I want to salute NATO because the NATO alliance was so instrumental for having a whole generation, 20 years of women and girls, to receive educations that they would have never received without the NATO presence, the allies, the alliances in Afghanistan. Now we cannot, we cannot let that go, slip away. We must keep our focus there, keep these women close to our hearts as we go forward because it’s not just about the women. It is about what it means for Afghanistan. It is not just about Afghanistan. It is what it means about security in the world.”

SOT, Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives: “If you rule the world, what one thing would you do? I think about that a lot if I rule the world. If any of us ruled the world, what one thing would we do? And that would be easy, it would be to prioritise the education of women and girls. It would make the biggest difference not only in their lives, their families, their communities, but to the world. Because we truly do believe that when women succeed, America succeeds or any country succeeds. But globally, we all succeed.”
