Residents of Bakhmut in Ukraine’s Donetsk region commented on Monday on the possibility of escalation of the conflict in the east of the country.

“People are tired of this escalation. I would like a normal life for people. Why would we all want this war? We need to find a common ground, a common understanding and resolve it politically, and not by bloodshed - that’s the main thing. [...]. People need peace,” said a Bakhmut resident.

On January 29, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the media give the impression that “there is a war going on, that we have troops on the streets, mobilisation,” noting that there was no need for “this panic”. He added, “I am not saying that the escalation can’t happen. We are already talking about it openly for 8 years. It has already happened, it has already begun.”

On January 28, US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin stressed that the US “has offered Russia a path away from crisis and toward greater security”.

Russia has denied accusations that it is gathering forces at the border with the intention of invading Ukraine.
