A team of restorers working at the Sican National museum unveiled a more than 1,000-year-old pre-Incan funerary bundle belonging to an elite member of the Sican or Lambayeque culture, along with a pectoral piece, as seen in footage filmed on Wednesday in Ferrenafe.
“We are talking about a funerary bundle, which was archaeologically excavated in 2008 under the Sican archaeological project, at that stage led by Dr Isumi Shimada and myself. One of the finds was interesting. It was a bundle documented in situ, where you can also see both luxurious elements of the head and the mask on the face of the individual who was sitting and a remarkable pectoral,” stated Sican National Museum director Carlos Elera.
The headdress contained a mask initially positioned on the characters face and bead sequencings representing cruciform designs.
“In principle, we are talking about tombs that contain numerous objects made of precious metal or various alloys and correspond chronologically between the years 900 to 1050, 1100 after Christ. Therefore, we can deduce that we are talking about a very wealthy elite stratified according to access to luxury goods. The more exotic from more distant places, the richer the character.
The Sican culture, which predated the Incas, inhabited the northern coast of Peru between the 8th and 14th centuries and displayed advanced skills in metallurgy, producing an array of copper and gold objects.
