Activists in Ventanilla have been helping to clean and care for animals affected by the recent oil spill in Lima, as seen on Thursday.

Luis Vargas an activist and organiser said, “we give them first aid, wash their beaks, nostrils, eyes. Where they excrete it is also important that they are cleaned so that they do not have difficulties.”
He continued, “a 500-metre (1,640 feet) net and collecting the oil with a simple rag is not going to help at all, gentlemen. Meshes need to be extended, boats are needed to reach the most affected areas, which are the islands where the birds are gathering and dying.”

The Tongan volcano eruption caused strong waves to hit a tanker that was unloading oil, resulting in a spill last week. The refinery, managed by Repsol, said around 6,000 barrels of oil leaked.
An investigation has been opened, after Repsol has been accused of not having a spillage plan.
