Peru: Archaeological excavations resume at Huaca Santa Rosa de Pucala following COVID set back

Works at the Huaca Santa Rosa de Pucala show archaeological excavation site resumed on Tuesday, following a pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among the discoveries made by palaeontologists are the remains of children, young people, and a burial chamber with four camelids and food remains, dated between 900 and 800 BC.

Edgar Bracamonte, archaeologist and director of the Huaca Santa Rosa project, explained that there is “the presence of food at the stomach level” of the camelids, which “would mean that they had been fed prior to death, prior to sacrifice and burial as part of the ritual offering.”

In addition, an excavation has begun on a new D-shaped enclosure that was discovered at the end of 2019, which would correspond to the population settlements of the Cupisnique, Mochica, Wari and Lambayeque cultures.

SOT, Edgar Bracamonte, Archaeologist and director of the Huaca Santa Rosa project (Spanish): “Two important areas have been excavated in the archaeological zone of Santa Rosa de Pucala, finding in one, other evidence of D-shaped architecture from the Wari period. We have managed to excavate these areas completely for the first time and we have found an important quantity of funerary contexts, offerings, basically of children and young people, and of camelids, which would make up the initial part of this first occupation with this foreign architecture, this Wari-style architecture, this is the first thing that has been found”.

SOT, Edgar Bracamonte, Archaeologist and director of the Huaca Santa Rosa project (Spanish): “We found an interesting finding, quite unique, it is a burial chamber made with fragments of adobe that had four compartments plastered with mud, and inside this kind of vault that they made they placed tender camelids, four tender camelids with a pattern quite similar to others that we found in 2011. This is interesting because they are placing these camelids, in addition, with remains of food, and another interesting thing that could be seen at the time of the excavation, which the biologist from the museum who accompanied us on the excavation told us, indicated that there is food at the level of the stomach, which would mean that they had been fed prior to death, prior to the sacrifice and to be buried as part of the ritual offering to place the first layer where these three D-shaped enclosures would be built”.
