Peru: Cusco celebrates 200 years of Peru's independence with military parade

Cusco commemorated the bicentennial of the independence of Peru with a military parade in Plaza Mayor on Tuesday.

Members of the Armed Forces and Police paraded in formation and marched holding a giant Peruvian flag.

“I am extremely proud to be a descendant of the Incas, Cusco, and Peru, now we have to work harder than ever and duplicate efforts to get out of this hole in which we are falling due to the pandemic, the political and economic situation that we have been going through,” said Julio Hancco, prefect of Cusco.

The declaration of Peru’s independence dates back to 1821 and marked an important event for the history of the Americas as it contributed to the downfall of the Spanish colonial power in South America, mainly located in Lima.

SOT, Victor Boluarte Medina, Mayor of Cusco (Spanish): “The Bicentennial in Cusco acquires a particular meaning because it not only evokes the prolegomena of our republican history but also the feats of struggle that still remain in the Andean mentality seeking justice.”

SOT, Major EP Guida Ruiz, Battalion chief of Fifth Mountain Brigade of Cusco (Spanish): “The message I would give you is, the goals you set for yourself, whatever the military, civil or professional career you choose, with love, affection and drive, you will achieve your goals.”
