Hundreds of demonstrators marched through central Lima on Friday, in protest of a set of labour standards projects proposed by Congress President Maricarmen Alva.

Participants could be seen holding flags and banners as they marched through the city centre, with the rally being led by the General Confederation of Workers (CGTP).

On September 29, Alva presented a proposed package of five bills to modify existing labour regulations. The suggested changes include allowing companies to dismiss employees more easily without compensation, as well as making fixed-term working contracts more flexible.

SOT, Luis Ortega, Protester (Spanish): “Pedro Castillo is a rural teacher, a man of the people who has come out of the town who is ruling even though they won’t let him govern, who has many stones along the way, that he must already make a firm decision with the support of the people and with the support of the graduates, kick ‘em up and throw all those scoundrels out.”
