Philippines: Locals react to Duerte’s retirement from politics

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has announced he will retire from politics when his current term ends, residents of Metro Manila reacted to the news on Saturday.

Duerte is backing out of a previously announced plan to run for vice president in next year’s elections.

“For me, it’s two things, first he might be tried and doesn’t want any trouble. He wants to rest and relax from the hectic six years as a politician. Maybe he wanted to refresh. Second, it’s maybe his tactic, it’s politician’s way of divisiveness,” a local said.

Many also lauded his harsh policy on drugs and corruption.

Philippine presidents are limited to a single six-year presidential term. Opposition parties said they would take the question of the legality of Duerte running for vice president to the supreme court if he went ahead with the plan.
