Former eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao has announced his retirement from boxing at age 42, during a pre-recorded video released on Monday from his General Santos gym.
“I never thought that this day would come. As I hang up my boxing gloves I would like to thank the whole world, especially the Filipino people, for supporting Manny Pacquiao,” said the boxer.
Pacquiao has served as a Filipino senator since 2016, and had the week prior announced his plan to run for president in the country’s 2022 election.
In August, Pacqiao had suffered defeat to Cuban boxer Yordenis Ugas, prompting concerns about his future career in the ring.
Paquiao is widely regarded as one of the best boxers of all-time, having won his first major title against Thailand’s Chatchai Sasakul aged 19 in 1998.
