Hundreds of Polish people marched in the streets of Warsaw on Saturday in solidarity with migrants stranded on the Polish-Belarusian border.
Waving banners and symbolic flags made of metallized plastic sheeting, the demonstrators shouted that migrants are ‘welcome.’
Tensions between the EU and Belarus have increased in recent months over the EU accusing Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately sending migrants to the border in response to the sanctions imposed by the EU, which he denies.
SOT, Demonstrator, (Polish): “We are gathered here to express our concern for those who are still in Polish forests. They were deceived by the Lukashenko regime, they were also deceived by the Polish authorities who, violating human rights and national law, did not allow them to submit an application for international protection.”
SOT, Demonstrator, (Polish):“This is a crisis that could have been avoided and it is a crisis that can still be resolved very quickly. Meanwhile, refugees suffer at the border, local residents suffer, and some finance officers suffer as well. Our state is giving us a collective trauma from which we will recover for many, many years to come.”
SOT, Demonstrator (Polish): “We are deeply convinced that the border of humanity runs right at the moment of the decision, whether I will show concern for a person, when he needs it, or if I will not show it to him. This is this slogan.”
