Poland: 'Mothers of the border' rally in support of migrants and volunteers at Belarus border

Dozens of people gathered on Saturday in Hajnowka, near the border with Belarus, to demonstrate in support of local and humanitarian organisations helping migrants amid the border crisis.

Chanting slogans such as, “The place of the people is not in the forest,” the demonstrators demanded help for people trapped on the Polish-Belarusian border while showing photographs of refugees in distressed conditions.

“We demand the opening of the corridor for humanitarian and medical aid to refugees in the forest,” said Maya, one of the activists.

“I was trying to explain it to my kids, because I’m a mother, and I can not find the words to explain my kids why some people are leaving other people in the forest when it’s so cold and we are not helping them,” said Ola, amid the crowd of rally participants.

Human rights groups accused Poland of exacerbating the suffering of refugees by sending back those who try to cross. Poland argues this is necessary to stop more people from coming.

SOT, Maya, Activist: “We came here to demonstrate solidarity and thank all the local people, all the activists, all the organisations that fight here on the daily basis for human rights here in Poland. So this is what we strongly believe that they are now fighting for the good name of Poland and honour of Polish people. We try to support them as much as we can, we brought some help, and we demonstrate, we demand opening the corridor for humanitarian aid and medical aid for the refugees in the forest. We believe that children are not meant to stay in the forest, to live there and die there.”

SOT, Agnieszka, Rally participant (Polish): “I am discharged and outraged that we do not help these people in any way, people are dying, this is a fact, it is not something that we think, that it is possible to escape, or hide. People are dying there, and there is no other option but to help them. We can’t leave them there, it’s getting colder, frosts are coming, people are just not trapped. It cannot be said that it is a problem of Belarus that they can go to the border and go in other way, they would return to their countries but they cannot.”

SOT, Ola, Rally participant: “I’m trying to understand how people are pushing back these people to the border and leaving them in the forest, I don’t understand. I was trying to explain it to my kids, because I’m a mother, and I can not find the words to explain my kids what some people are leaving other people in the forest when it’s so cold and we are not helping them. That’s why I came here to show solidarity to people who’re helping this people.”
