Hundreds of pro-choice activists rallied outside the Sejm in Warsaw as the Polish parliament debated a proposal to completely ban abortion in Poland on Wednesday, including cases of rape and pregnancies that pose a threat to women’s health.
Under the “stop abortion” bill, a foetus would classify as a child. Were it to become law, any person who helps a woman travel to an abortion facility, as well as the woman herself, could face years of imprisonment for murder.
One of the two debated bills includes a government plan to register every pregnancy in a national database, a ‘Family and Demographic Institute,’ also aimed at increasing Poland’s birth rates by limiting the number of divorces.
Activists fear that the ‘pregnancy registry’ would allow authorities to track pregnancy development and create a possible prosecution device if gestations are terminated before birth.
Protesters held signs with red paint symbolizing blood while chanting slogans and wearing the symbolic green scarf.
It is not yet clear if either of the legislative proposals has a chance of being passed.

SOT, Marta Lempart, Women’s Strike leader (Polish): “It is better to be here than to be there and listen to their bullshit. It’s better to be here than to be there and say the bullshit the fundamentalists and fascists will be saying in a moment. It is better to be here, I prefer to be here, even though I am cold, and I think to myself, how much longer?”
SOT, Marta Lempart, Women’s Strike leader (Polish):“On the road to legal abortion, fundamentalists and fascists will place such barriers on us. They will push us to the bottom of frustration and discouragement and of almost no hope. Almost.”
