A commemoration ceremony took place in Auschwitz concentration camp near Oswiecim on Thursday to mark the 77th anniversary of the sire’s liberation by Soviet forces at the end of World War II.

The main theme of the 77th anniversary was the beginning of the extermination in Auschwitz, which took place in the spring of 1942. Many Holocaust survivors spoke during the ceremony, with Bogdan Bartnikowski, a Polish Jew who survived Auschwitz describing his treatment at the hands of the SS at the concentration camp.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year only a small group of guests took part in the ceremony at the site of the memorial.

SOT, Bogdan Bartnikowski, Auschwitz survivor (Polish): “When on August 12 1944, I found myself on the ramp in Birkenau. I was one of over 500 Polish children who were taken from the uprising in Warsaw. In the first transport of civilians we were immediately taken by the SS staff and the Capo, that’s the guards of the camp, they immediately called us Little Polish Bandits from Warsaw.”
