Thousands of Poles rallied in Warsaw on Sunday to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising military operation of 1944.

The Warsaw Uprising was a fight-back effort by Warsaw’s resistance movement against the Nazi German occupiers during World War Two.

Sirens traditionally wail at 17:00 (15:00 GMT) throughout the city as part of a minute of commemorative silence, marking the time the resistance operation started on August 1, 1944.

Many attending the remembrance rally in the centre of Warsaw brought flares and Polish flags.

Those choosing to attend the marching element of the commemorative event, which was also attended by right-wing elements, chanted slogans including: “Honour and praise to the heroes” and “Long live the Home Army (Polish resistance movement)”.

The Warsaw Uprising lasted for sixty-three days and ultimately ended in a heavy defeat for the resistance movement, with the vast majority of the city being razed to the ground and approximately 150,000 civilians having lost their lives.
