Police Clash with Protesters After Anarchist Squatters Removed from Liebig 34 Squat

Notorious Berlin squat, Liebig 34, has homed left-wing activists since the fall of the Berlin Wall however 1,500 police officers were sent to clear the building after squatters refused to leave. 

The collective describe themselves as an ‘anarcha-queer-feminist’ housing project.

The owner refused to renew the group’s ten-year contract in 2018, after the group had occupied the heavily graffitied building for almost 30 years.

Police had to penetrate a first floor window after protesters had barricaded the front door.

Locals suggest the group’s resistance was a protest against the gentrification of Berlin, the German capital’s rental rates have risen 30% in the previous five years, one of the largest increases in the world.
