Several gravestones have been knocked over at a Jewish cemetery in Chemnitz, most likely between the last Thursday and Tuesday, according to police, as seen on Wednesday.

“On site, it was discovered that three graves and three gravestones have been overturned. However, the time of the offence extends between July 8th until July 13th, which corresponds to the time between last Thursday and yesterday’s Tuesday,” said Police Chief Superintendent and spokesperson Jana Ulbricht.

She stressed that the Chemnitz Police Department was informed on Wednesday that several gravestones were damaged.

Ulbricht added the criminal police of the state protection department had taken over the further investigation and stressed that the offence might have been politically motivated.

“A political motive cannot be ruled out and, given the location, is quite likely to have been such. We are also looking for witnesses who can make statements on the perpetrators, or who can help us find out the time of the crime,” she said.
