Dalton Higgins, a Canadian author, journalist, and publicist, explained that starting from January 2022, he would be teaching a course on the cultural significance of Hip Hop and R&B with the analysis of contemporary artists Drake and the Weeknd at Ryerson University, in Toronto, on Thursday.
The course, titled ‘Deconstructing Drake and The Weeknd,’ will be offered by The Creative School faculty of Ryerson University under its Professional Music BFA program.
Higgins plans on exploring the trajectory of the Canadian hip hop megastars, race and representation in music, and the many sociological dimensions to the popstars’ success.
According to Higgins, Toronto is a multicultural megacity that has produced unique musical expressions due to its diversity and unique history. He hopes that by teaching classes on Toronto hip-hop, universities will become more representative of the diversity in their cities.
“Innovation in education is essential,” said Charles Falzon, dean of The Creative School. “Honestly, if you can’t be innovative in a creative school, like ourselves in the creative school, where we have imagination in all programs, where could you do it? So it’s really important to us that a program, like this, which is preparing people for professional music, is not governed by limitations of ‘old fashioned, medieval type of education,” he added.
