A self-taught painter and Russian immigrant Lena Ruseva has stirred up the NY art scene with a controversial series of paintings depicting former US President Donald Trump in a world of scenarios, from King Tut to a Buddhist monk, as seen in footage filmed in New York City on Thursday.

In the collection of 30 paintings under the name ‘Trump: Parallel Universe,’ Ruseva decided to dedicate her first collection to the former President due to the mixed feelings he provokes.

“Some people hate him. Some people love him. But I wasn’t following one or another part. I just thought of him as a person with feelings. Probably some days, he feels weak. Probably some days, he just wants to hug his pillow and turn off his phone and not hear from anybody as it happens with all of us,” stated Ruseva.

The exhibition was well received at the Metropolitan Republican Club last month but received widespread criticism from New York art scene representatives.

The gallery that had agreed to host the show received threats and withdrew from staging it.

“I expected that I would have some negative feedback. I didn’t expect to get so much resistance, and I didn’t expect so liberal NY, where everybody is about your freedom and rights. You have the right to say and perform yourself as you want. I didn’t expect that they would try to cancel my show.”

The exhibition imagines POTUS in various settings, from Trump dressed as a knight in shining armour, to Tarzan swinging from a vine, to even a Van Gogh inspired background with Trump personified as Harry Potter.
