Protesters gather outside Djokovic hotel to show support as tennis player awaits court challenge

Dozens of protesters gathered in front of the immigration hotel where Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic is being held in Melbourne on Saturday, to show support while his legal team defies the government’s decision to deport him.

Demonstrators could be seen waving Serbian flags and playing Serbian songs outside the hotel.
“He is our blood we are all Serbs and we think vaccinated or not everyone should have a choice, everyone has their freedom rights,” a protester said.

Djokovic is claiming the Australian government is holding him captive for not complying with the vaccine restrictions needed to compete in the Australian Open.

The Australian government claims Djokovic is not being held against his will and is allowed to leave the country when he pleases.

SOT, Protester: “I think vaccinated or not we all have our own choice we all have our freedom rights and putting one of the greatest athletes in the world and the greatest tennis athlete who has won nine grand slams here. When we had bush fires he donated money not even our own prime minister donated money so for all of us to be out here showing our love, we all stand for him, he is our blood we are all Serbs and we think vaccinated or not everyone should have a choice, everyone has their freedom rights and I think what they are doing is worse than a communist country.”

SOT, Protester: “Unfortunately Novak is a scapegoat in all of this he is being used by the Australian government, between the federal and the state governments they do not want to take ownership, and unfortunately Novak has suffered the consequences of it. Just not fair, for someone like Federer, Murray I do not think this would have happened but because of being Djokovic and what he stands for that is why they have gone tough on him to use him as a scapegoat.”
