‘Protesters in the Philippines Clash With Security Forces on International Women’s Day’

Hundreds of women in Manila in the Philippines have been protesting to mark International Working Women’s Day.

Nearly a thousand gathered to protest the rise of unemployment, poverty and human rights violations during the pandemic.

Protesters carried a 10ft effigy, called Dutertutaka, resembling the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

Human rights watchdog Karapatan said security forces tried to block protesters from joining the march.

World March of Women said the protest was to raise awareness about gender inequality and to celebrate the strength of Filipino women.
