Protesters rallied in Rome against a so-called green pass, adopted by the Italian government in an effort to curb rising COVID infections due to the Delta variant.
Tensions rose during the protest. Some protesters accused the government of trampling on freedoms. Others also expressed concern that the new requirement might hurt their businesses.
Angelo Di Stefano of the Partita IVA Association said: “This is a situation that is not manageable. It is incalculable. Imagine that a customer has been coming for 10 years and wants to enter, and I have to tell him that he cannot enter because he is not vaccinated. Because he is afraid to get vaccinated. What should we do? This is an injustice. There is no freedom of choice.”
From August 6, Italians will be required to present a green pass, a certificate showing vaccination or a recent negative test, to access sports halls, cultural venues as well as indoor restaurants and bars.
Some protesters carried placards evoking South Africa’s apartheid and Nazi persecutions during World War II, with several wearing Yellow Star badges resembling the ones Jews were forced to wear.
“Nobody denies COVID. We are not anti-vax. We just want to get our freedom back. Freedom of movement, freedom of business, and above all, freedom of sanitary treatment,” stressed another protester.
