Thousands of protesters took to the streets of New Delhi following the arrest of a political opponent of Indian PM Narendra Modi.

Arvind Kejriwal, New Delhi’s most senior elected official, was arrested by a federal agency controlled by Modi’s national government. The agency accuses Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of accepting $12M worth of bribes over liquor contracts two years ago.

But the AAP says the charges are politically motivated, and Modi is attempting to shut down opposition ahead of next month’s elections.

At the protest on Friday, a number of people were arrested and driven away on a bus.

Separately, another opposition party, the Indian National Congress (INC), said Modi’s government had frozen its bank accounts. Modi’s government says the accounts were frozen because of a missing income tax return for donations received between 2017-2018.

India’s general elections will be held in seven phases from 19 April to 1 June, with the result to expected on 4 June.
