Puerto Rico: Hundreds march through San Juan against austerity measures

Hundreds of protesters marched through the streets of San Juan on Monday demanding the departure of the Financial Oversight and Management Board, as well as its executive director, Natalie Jaresko.
During the national holiday of Labour Day, demonstrators were seen chanting slogans and carrying banners reading, ‘All Puerto Rico against the Board’ and ‘Don’t steal my pension,’ decrying decisions taken by the Board on essential services such as education, health and security.
“Since the financial control board arrived in Puerto Rico, educational systems have been damaged, the public system has been damaged, services have been privatised, all to the detriment of the labour force,” said President of the Puerto Rican Association of University Professors (APPU) Angel Rodriguez Rivera.
The march ended near the building of the Court of Appeals, where the offices of the Board are located.

SOT, Angel Rodriguez Rivera, President of the Puerto Rican Association of University Professors (APPU) (Spanish): “We are here today, and we are going to march demanding the removal of Puerto Rico’s fiscal control. The reasons are simple, the reasons are understood by everyone. Since the financial control board arrived in Puerto Rico, educational systems have been damaged, the public system has been damaged, services have been privatised, all to the detriment of the labour force, of the poor sector of Puerto Rico and everything is in function of collecting money for the collectors. It is a collection agency that does not have space here, neither does the law promise, nor the fines of the fiscal control. That is the great demand that we have today.”

SOT, Member of Legal Solidarity Brigade NGO (Spanish): “We are here today, at the demonstration of this country, in solidarity with the different movements. A demonstration had already been called, a march against the board, so now we are here with the people, we are basically walking with them, observing their right to demonstrate and it is the right of the whole country.”
