Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the sidelines of a ‘Belt and Road’ initiative meeting in Beijing.

The two leaders spoke of ‘deepening trust’ between the two countries, and a plan for ‘close strategic cooperation’.

Putin underscored the importance of respecting ‘civilizational diversity and the right of each state to its own development model’. This has been interpreted as a thinly veiled criticism of the US-led universalist and rules-based international order.

The meeting comes as Ukraine proceeds with its counter-offensive against Russia, while Russia continues to bombard Ukrainian towns. Putin was one of many leaders and national representatives in Beijing to celebrate 10 years of China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative.

The initiative is China’s flagship foreign policy project. Beijing has invested billions in infrastructure projects and development loans all over the world. It aims to connect the world’s trade to China, as well as foster stronger diplomatic relations with the countries it invests in.
