Xiborg CEO Ken Endo displayed his company’s latest prosthetic technology being used and tested on Paralympians in Tokyo on Tuesday.
The start-up making high-tech running blades for Paralympians and hope to use ever-improving technology to make affordable blades for everyday athletes as well.
“The technology has improved and we can get a newer material, the newer technology to make prosthetics. And moreover, athletes also evolve so they always change their running behaviour to run faster. So maybe combination of the evolution of material and prosthetics technology and athletes, both of them are very important so we are doing like a co-evolution of the technology and human,” explained Xiborg CEO Endo.

SOT, Ken Endo, Xiborg Company CEO: “Some researchers show that the stiffness of the tendon, achilles tendon​, part of the tissue of the body, is very important to run faster. That is something that we can not change because this is what we have from when we are born, so based on that parameter we have to revise our running behaviour but a paralympian can just do it by replacing their blade from one to the other one. So they have more option to improve their running behaviour.”

SOT, Ken Endo, Xiborg Company CEO: “So this is basically a spring. So once the athlete pushes the prosthetic they can store the mechanical power like the other coil spring. That power is use to accelerate the body upward and forward.”

SOT, Ken Endo, Xiborg Company CEO: “So beyond the feedback from the athlete, we also measure analytically using the motion capture system. So we are getting a data of them running using some technology and analyse it and base on the data and feedback of the athletes we sometimes change the shape, sometimes change the angle and the process is complicated. But we repeat the cycle or the prototype as much as possible to find the best solution for the athlete.”
