Redefining the high-press! Cholitas climbers play football at almost 6,000 metres above sea level​

Footage filmed on Wednesday shows a group of Cholitas Escaladoras (climbers) playing a football match on the snow-capped Huayna Potosi mountain at 5,870 metres above sea level.

Dressed in their traditional brightly coloured “polleras” (skirts), these brave Aymara women, with Bolivian flags in hand, climbed to the top of the mountain to play football in defiance of the weather and the altitude.

The match brought together two teams, each consisting of seven players.

The women’s collective Cholitas Escaladoras, founded in 2015, is made up of Aymara women of different ages and has become a symbol for indigenous visibility and equality.

The indigenous women’s group has conquered Bolivia’s main mountains in recent years.

SOT, Julia Quispe Tinkuta, Cholitas Escaladoras president (Spanish): “I started as a porter, my dad was a porter before, he worked with the tourists and carried the tourists’ backpacks. And I helped my dad, I carried 30 to 35 kilos.”

SOT, Chirit Tana Quispe, 13-year-old Cholita climber (Spanish): “I am 13-years-old and I am a climber. This is my third mountain and I really like climbing and I want to continue climbing more mountains.”

SOT, Alicia Quispe Tinkuta, Cholitas Escaladoras founder (Spanish): “We are Cholitas Escaladoras, I am the founder of Cholitas Escaladoras. I founded it more than anything else to do activities in 2015, the 2nd of December was the first mountain I climbed, Huayna Potosi at 6,088 metres.”
