A team of archaeologists were filmed on Thursday and Friday working in a mass grave in Belchite, near Zaragoza. The archaeologists uncovered the remains of 150 bodies belonging to victims executed by Franco’s army in July 1936.

Archaeologists had been searching for the mass grave for two weeks, guided by the testimony of Falangist Constantino Lafoz Garces in 1937. According to Garces, 200 executions took place inside the cemetery on 20 July 1936, during the first week of the Civil War, and another 200 around the village under orders from the Falange.

Bones and skulls were found just a few centimetres above the ground on land where a cemetery would later be built.

The exhumation of the bodies found in Belchite is part of the new Democratic Memory Bill to restore the memory of the victims of Franco’s dictatorship.

The town was destroyed during the Battle of Belchite, between August and September 1937, in which some 5,000 people died in a surprise attack by the Republican army against Franco’s troops that left the town devastated.
