Retired 33-year-old bald eagle gets a pedicure

This is Volta, a senior bald eagle in his 30s. He’s getting work done on his beak so it’s in an ideal shape. Volta has got a pretty severe case of old man toenails. And just like people get pedicures, raptors under human care get their talons done in what is called ‘coping.’ We didn’t give him any medication. He’s basically just taking an eagle nap. In the wild, many birds cope naturally as they break into bones and work to get meat off their prey. For birds that can’t be released into the wild, raptor keepers help maintain their beaks and talons through coping.

Alaska Raptor Center does extraordinary work in providing care for hundreds of injured birds each year. This hood allows these patients to remain calm. It does not damage feathers or hamper breathing by allowing air circulation and does not come into contact with the bird’s eyes. Most birds are released after recovery but some are injured so severely they can’t survive in the wild even after rehabilitation. And those may end up becoming raptors-in-residence at the center, serving as education ambassadors. And the center staff ensures they get the best care as well as the most enrichment possible.

Spirit is enjoying some time down by the river. Spirit came to the center in 2015 after colliding with a car in Juno, Alaska. She undergoes specialized treatment so she can stay calm during interactions with her trainers. Sitka can no longer effectively grasp prey. She was also hit by a car. She is the heaviest bald eagle here, weighing in at 14 pounds.

For such a powerful bird, the bald eagle has a surprisingly shrill sounding call. For that reason, the screaming sounds of eagles you hear in the movies are actually the vocalization of a red-tailed hawk, used to provide a dramatic effect. Forty years ago, our national symbol was in danger of extinction. But they have staged a remarkable population rebound due to numerous conservation initiatives. And today, efforts by Alaska Raptor Center and other organizations promote awareness about the stunning beauty and splendor of this iconic creature.
