Hikmet Kaya, a retired forest research chief, showcased an impressive before and after of his life’s work in Boyabat, Sinop province, on Wednesday.

“It was just thorns,” noted Kaya, as he emphasised that when starting the forestation project in 1980, there were no trees on the land.

Before and after photos held by Kaya present a view of a transformed landscape.

“As a forest research chief, I didn’t want this field to stand like this (without trees). I thought about reforestation here, so I designed it. Since the area remains within the boundaries of Akyork village council, I contacted the villagers and set up a working group. We started working with them.” commented Kaya.

“In 1981, to mark the centenary of Ataturk’s birth, we decided to plant trees here,” added Kaya .

According to Kaya, approximately 800,000 red pine saplings were initially planted in 1981.

Throughout his career, the retired forestry worker estimates that he has overseen the planting of 30 million trees, across 25 years.

“I’d say I’m proud of myself. I’m proud and proud of myself for knowing the history of the field and seeing the state of the field today,” said Kaya, who retired from his job in 2002.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Hikmet Kaya, Retired forestry worker (Turkish): “We are in the forest reforestation area business of Boyabat Forest Management Directorate. We started the project site in 1980 by preparing land, in other words, making terraces. There were no trees on this land before we started the reforestation work. It was just thorns which we call rations.”

SOT, Hikmet Kaya, Retired forestry engineer (Turkish): “In 1981, we planted around 800,000 red pine saplings. After planting, we carried out the maintenance of saplings, which we call the least cultural care.”

SOT, Hikmet Kaya, Retired forestry worker (Turkish): “It takes a lot of skill to achieve up to 90 percent of success in places like this. In that respect, I’d say I’m proud of myself. I’m proud and proud of myself for knowing the history of the field and seeing the state of the field today.”

SOT, Hikmet Kaya, Retired forestry worker (Turkish): “We’ve done 25 years of reforestation, I’ve planted about 30 million saplings, but I haven’t lost my enthusiasm yet. Since retiring in 2002, I can say that I have longed to plant seedlings and see the sapling.”
