Naruo Ono has kicked off a trend in Japan by inventing rice baby bags, which have the face of a newborn baby printed on them, and weigh as much as the newborn. Customers can offer relatives that live far away a glimpse of the baby despite the distance and COVID restrictions. Ono displayed the bags to the media in Fukuoka on Saturday.
“When our son was born, we thought about what to give in return (for the gift which they have received for the celebration of the baby’s birth), because a normal gift would not be interesting, and we are the rice shop. So we decided to give something related to rice,” stated creator Naruo Ono.
As in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the contact also in Japan has been severely restricted, and thus the need to send some gratitude to relatives. “As soon as Coronavirus pandemic started, all the wedding ceremonies had been cancelled, and almost all the reservations and orders we had at that time were cancelled,” Ono added.
“In Japan, gifts have been important since ancient times, and I would like to respond to the declining trend of marriage and births by evolving the gift-giving process by adding new technologies such as this kind of printing, not just traditional gifts,” explained Ono.
Moreover, the content of the present can easily be cooked, and the paper kept for the memory, making it a double purpose present.

SOT, Naruo Ono, Owner of ‘Kome no Zoto Yoshimiya rice shop’ (Japanese): “Since distant relatives have a small chance to see what the baby looks like and can’t hold the baby, the package should include the baby’s photo and the weight of the rice according to the baby’s birth weight, in a way that is as reminiscent of a baby as possible.”
SOT, Naruo Ono, Owner of ‘Kome no Zoto Yoshimiya rice shop’ (Japanese): “This is a product where you can prepare an old photo of yourself when you were born, and make it according to your birth weight, and give it to your parents at your wedding as a token of your gratitude for giving birth, so that your parents can remember the old days when their child was born.”

Far from being able to meet grandchildren, unable to meet their own children. Although it’s not a real baby, this product allows them to feel the weight of their grandchild, and it’s also made in a very similar shape.”
SOT, Naruo Ono, Owner of ‘Kome no Zoto Yoshimiya rice shop’ (Japanese): “In fact, the number of marriages and births is decreasing, and since our main products are wedding gifts, I am quite worried about it. And even if people get married, the number of couples who don’t hold weddings ceremony is increasing.”
