Wide-eyed and cheery A.I. robot Ami-chan has popped into the market, as seen on Friday in Tokyo, steering away sentiments of loneliness among the elderly affected by the ongoing pandemic.

The Takara Tomy company developed the ‘electronic grandchild’ with a digital mind to help reduce isolation in older populations. This decade enhanced Tamagotchi boasts of a vocabulary of 1,600 Japanese words and uses facial recognition to identify each grandparent.

Sumino Nishihara, an employee of the Futako Tamagawa Tsutaya Electrics store in Tokyo, stated, “It is said that there are 6 million elderly people who live alone,” and “I think it is very important for the elderly to have someone to talk to or something to stimulate them. Research has shown that by talking with Ami-chan, you can expect to revitalise your brain every day.”

Ami-chan can sing over 40 different rhymes, songs, and tongue twisters that help activate certain areas of the brain before it runs off batteries and is available in stores starting August 27.

“It reminds them of their experience of raising children when they were young, and they can do things like putting the doll to bed to make her asleep, or even changing her clothes, or tying her hair,” Nishihara added.

According to reports by the Japanese government, an estimate of 36 million are elderly, and around six million live alone.

SOT, Sumino Nishihara, Futako Tamagawa Tsutaya Electrics staff (Japanese): “It is said that there are 6 million elderly people who live alone. We have heard that the toy manufacture, Takara- Tomy, also found a need for a doll for daughters and sons who worry about the elderly living alone, and they developed this doll.”

SOT, Sumino Nishihara, Futako Tamagawa Tsutaya Electrics staff (Japanese): “It is hard to go out and visit them amid Corona pandemic right now. So, by sending them a doll like this, I think it can help soothe the loneliness of the grandmother and prevent her brain from becoming forgetful due to not being able to see other people.”

SOT, Sumino Nishihara, Futako Tamagawa Tsutaya Electrics staff (Japanese): “I think it is very important for the elderly to have someone to talk to or something to stimulate them. Research has shown that by talking with Ami-chan, you can really expect to revitalize your brain every day.”

SOT, Sumino Nishihara, Futako Tamagawa Tsutaya Electrics staff (Japanese): “For example, “What did you eat yesterday? or “When was the last time you ate fish? or “What was your favorite food when you were a child?”, and so on. It asks you questions about those old memories.”

SOT, Sumino Nishihara, Futako Tamagawa Tsutaya Electrics staff (Japanese): “By interacting with a doll on a daily basis, they can keep their brains active, and at the same time, have fun and not feel lonely in this way.”
