A Chinese company has created an eerily realistic fish-like underwater drone, as seen in the Beijing suburb of Yizhuang, on Tuesday.

The underwater drone is modelled after an arowana fish, a species of freshwater bony fish, and was first presented to the public at a military expo in Beijing earlier in July.

Robosea, the local company behind the project, specialises in marine exploration through technology and innovation, and has multiple other drones on the market.

The company’s CEO, Yuhan Fu, explained that the drone would hopefully be acquired by aquariums, allowing them to purchase fewer endangered and protected fish, as well as adding a science element to their exhibits.

In 2018, founder and then CEO Minglei Xiong made it onto Forbes’ 30 under 30 list.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Yuhan Fu, CEO of Robosea (Mandarin): “In addition to the bionic appearance of this fish, in fact, its greatest bionic feature lies in the way it moves. We carefully studied the movement of the real fish, so that this movement can be applied to the robot, so that it has the living habits of creatures in the water.”

SOT, Yuhan Fu, CEO of Robosea (Mandarin): “In fact, the purpose of this is to enable robot fish and natural fish to live in harmony in the same environment. Because our robot fish will also go to work in lakes and rivers in the future, so we also have to study the habits of real fish, and then we can make it get along better with other group of fishes.”

SOT, Yuhan Fu, CEO of Robosea (Mandarin): “After that, there are some applications that are underwater detection and observation. In order not to destroy the living environment of this kind of marine life, it is also necessary to let the robotic fish adapt to the normal living environment of underwater creatures, so that they can not disturb the lives of other marine creatures.”

SOT, Yuhan Fu, CEO of Robosea (Mandarin): “There is an infrared obstacle avoidance device at the front end of the golden arowana, which takes the initiative to avoid an object when it detects it.”

SOT, Yuhan Fu, CEO of Robosea (Mandarin): “There are also many well-known aquariums at home and abroad hoping to reduce the investment of some marine life as much as possible, because many fish are endangered and protected animals. So now, for some reasons, the purchase of these marine creatures will be less and less, and we hope for such a result. However, for the aquarium, the fun experience of visitors cannot be reduced, so the aquarium wants to use robot fish instead of some real fish, and can also use these robot fish to interact with tourists. At the same time, it can add some kind of science and technology to the aquarium as well.”
