Ronaldo's 'Obscene Gesture' Causes Outrage in Saudi Arabia

Cristiano Ronaldo made this gesture after Al-Nassr’s win over Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia on Sunday. Al-Shabab fans can be heard chanting the name of Ronaldo’s long-standing football rival Lionel Messi in the background.

The Portuguese football star has played for Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr since 2023. He has been criticised for similar incidents in the past.

Ronaldo is reportedly being paid the highest salary of any sports player in history: around $200 million a year.

The incident has been met with anger in Saudi Arabia, which is a conservative Islamic absolute monarchy. The oil-rich kingdom has spent billions of dollars attempting to transform itself into a sports and entertainment powerhouse.

In November a special museum dedicated to Ronaldo was opened in the Saudi capital of Riyadh.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) has opened an investigation into the incident.
