Russia: Bear cub rescued in the Arkhyz moved to rehabilitation centre

Arya, a female bear cub rescued in the Arkhyz mountains in September, was moved to the new home, the rehabilitation centre for wild animals named ‘Veles’ in St. Petersburg. Ruptly spoke with a veterinarian from the centre Natalia Bondarenko on Friday about the bear cub’s adaptation and future plans.

The bear was found by Karachay-Cherkessia resident Aslan Kagiev, when he arrived in Arkhyz on vacation. The man saw an animal chained to a utility pole and decided to shelter her for a while. After that, he contacted the ‘Veles’ centre and transferred the ‘foundling’ to the Leningrad region.

The new guest was named Arya and she became their 22nd bear that is in care at the centre. Arya was placed next to another bear, Sonata. The centre workers plan that the two females will get along and they can eventually be released into the forest together.

“[Sonata] and she are at least in touch. They snorted at each other, growled, and were afraid to come closer to each other at the beginning. And now they are poking their noses at the neighbours,” stated Bondarenko.

In the centre Arya is being fed milk, cereals, fruits and vegetables.

“She feels great, adapts very quickly. This is typical for all bears of this wonderful age. We will receive land and they will go to the forest to live under our care. We will feed them, and they will not sit in enclosures, but live in the forest,” Bondarenko went on to say.

In addition to bears, the centre is taking care of reindeer, raccoons, foxes, wolves, lynxes, arctic foxes, and even some lions.
