A non-working period ordered by the government to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Moscow is nearing its end, as seen on Friday.

Moscovites were seen strolling around Arbat street, riding electric scooters and picking up orders from nearby cafes.

The non-working period, nicknamed ‘covidays’, short for COVID and holidays, started on October 28 with most businesses and services open to the public as well as schools and kindergartens suspending their operation.

Higher and secondary vocational education institutions continued functioning remotely, while the capital’s restaurants and cafes worked for takeaway and delivery only.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Wednesday that due to the stabilisation of COVID-19 cases trends in Moscow, the authorities would not prolong the non-working period beyond November 7.
