SOT, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): “Sergey Kuzhugetovich (Shoigu), I know you’re ready today to report on the drills we’re conducting in different areas of the world’s oceans: in the Far East, in the south, in the north, in the Central Military District and with our friends in Belarus. I’m listening to you, please.”

Sergei Shoigu, Russian Minister of Defence (Russian): “Vladimir Vladimirovich, indeed, I wanted to report on the drills’ process. The large-scale exercises are taking place in the Western Military District, in almost all fleets – in the Barents Sea, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the Pacific Fleet. Troops from practically all military districts, including the Eastern Military District, the Central Military District, and the Northern Fleet, are taking part in them. Some of these drills are coming to an end, others will be completed in the near future. I would like to point out that all kinds of enemy actions are practiced on all fronts, including enemy actions both in the surface and underwater environment and in the ocean zone. As a result of Pacific Fleet Group’s work, while practicing one part of the drills near the Kuril Islands and the Urup island, a submarine, probably from the United States, was discovered. It was removed from Russian Federation territory, where it was more than four kilometers deep by island standards, after nearly three hours of action. The boat was removed from Russian waters as a result of special action on this boat, threefold actions. This kind of activity in the east is completely incomprehensible and unjustified. But I want to repeat that the drills will take place: some of them have been completed, some of them are completing, and there’s still more to do, given the scale of the drills that have been planned and that were launched at your instructions back in December.”

Russia has ended a number of large-scale military exercises across the country, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin at a meeting in Moscow on Monday.

“The large-scale exercises are taking place in the Western Military District, in almost all fleets – in the Barents Sea, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the Pacific Fleet,” Shoigu stated.

“Troops from practically every military district, including the Eastern Military District, the Central Military District, and the Northern Fleet, are taking part in them,” he said.

Some of the exercises have wrapped up already with others expected to end soon as well, Shoigu added.

The defence minister also commented on an incident involving a foreign submarine during the Pacific Fleet’s drills off the Kuril Islands on Saturday near the small uninhabited island of Urup.

“A submarine, probably from the United States, was discovered. It was removed from Russian Federation territory, where it was more than four kilometers deep by island standards, after nearly three hours of action,” he said, calling such actions “completely incomprehensible and unjustified”.
