Russia: Drone footage captures extent of oil spill near Novorossiysk

A criminal investigation into marine pollution is underway after an oil spill in the Black Sea near Novorossiysk, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported on Wednesday. According to the committee, an investigative team immediately went to the scene of the incident to inspect the area and take samples. Drone footage shows the extent of the oil spill, alongside work being undertaken to clean up the polluted areas.

The oil spill took place on Saturday, August 7th, when the Greek vessel Minerva Symphony was loading at the terminal of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), approximately six kilometres from the coastline. Reports say the internal cavity of the hydraulic compensator collapsed in the remote mooring device.

Initially, the CPC reported that the spill area covered some 200 square metres. However, the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, based on the data of the Sentinel-1 satellite, later estimated the oil slick covers approximately 80 square kilometres. The CPC states that a special commission has been established to investigate the causes and conditions that led to the incident.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, water samples taken in recreational areas of the Black Sea revealed no breaches of the maximum permissible concentration of petroleum products.

The CPC pipeline is an international oil transportation project, tasked with constructing and operating a pipeline of over 1.5 thousand kilometres. Currently, work is underway to increase the pipeline’s capacity to 72.5 million tons.
