Russia: Firefighting operations continue as fire tears through Yakutia forests

State autonomous institution “Yakutlesresurs” firefighters, as well as local residents and volunteers, extinguished forest fires in the Darkylakh region in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

The footage, shot on Sunday, July 18, shows forest fires. Firefighters work in conditions of heavy smoke, which makes it difficult to extinguish fires.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), a difficult forest fire situation persists in the territory of 12 districts at the moment. There 190 epicentres of fires have been registered.

An airmobile group of specialists of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia is involved to protect settlements. Firefighters made and expanded mineralized strips along the settlements, and also extinguished individual epicentres along the perimeter of the fires.

According to Avialesookhrana, there are currently 416 wildfires epicentres on the territory of the Russian Federation, 78 of them are localized on an area of 122,776 hectares.

It is reported that 6,545 people, as well as 1,052 units of equipment and 35 aircraft were involved in extinguishing fires during the day in several regions of the Russian Federation.
