The first Beijing Winter Olympics medallists were welcomed with an orchestra and applause on Saturday at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow.

Fans greeted the athletes with placards and chanted motivational slogans.

Anastasia Smirnova, the Beijing Olympics bronze medallist in freestyle skiing, said she found the warm welcome extremely gratifying, as fan support in China was not ‘enough.’

Parallel giant slalom bronze medallist Vic Wild shared that he really wants to get home and get some sleep.

“The mood is great, everything is great. I just want to go home and be calm. I am sleepy,” said Wild.

According to media reports, silver medallists in ski jumping Irina Avvakumova and Irma Makhinya, bronze medallist in luge Tatiana Ivanova, snowboarder Victor Wild and freestyle skier Anastasia Smirnova arrived in Moscow.

The XXIV Olympic Winter Games kicked off in Beijing on February 4, 2022. 212 athletes from Russia went to the Games under the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) flag. As of Saturday evening, Russia had 13 medals in its collection. The Russian athletes placed eighth in the team event.
