A flight from Krasnodar, in southwestern Russia, intended to land in Moscow made an emergency landing in Nizhny Novgorod, 400 km (250 mi) west of the Russian capital due to impenetrable fog in Moscow, on Tuesday.
Passengers were seen waiting in the cabin to disembark after landing at 10:30 am local time (7:30 GMT). Some 40 flights redirected to the airport later queued for departure towards Moscow.
According to the pilot, Nizhny Novgorod was the only option for the plane to land as other airports were also overcrowded due to flights being redirected from the capital.
“We waited as long as we could, [other flights] took off according to the weather forecast, which was acceptable, but, unfortunately, we were put in a queue and these 15 minutes were not enough for us,” he said through the passenger announcement system.
Nizhny Novgorod Governor Gleb Nikitin told media about 1,500 passengers remain stranded at the airport. The regional government has formed an operational headquarters due to the situation with the delayed flights.
“Passengers who are waiting for departure more than eight hours in the daytime and more than six hours at night will receive assistance,” said the government website.
Nizhny Novgorod airport reportedly accepted 33 aircraft redirected from Moscow.
Thick fog blanketed streets and buildings of the Russian capital in the early hours of Tuesday. According to meteorologists, the fog was due to rapid atmospheric cooling in Moscow but is expected to dissipate by Tuesday late evening.
