Russia: Moscow monitoring growing tensions in Tajik-Afghan relations "with concern" - FM spox

The Deputy Director of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alexei Zaitsev, expressed concern at tensions between Tajikistan and Afghanistan during a briefing in Moscow on Thursday.
“There are reports that the sides are pulling military forces to the common border and, according to the Taliban Movement, tens of thousands of special units are deployed in the border province of Takhar in Afghanistan only”, explained Zaitsev.
On behalf of the ministry, Zaitsev urged Tajik and Afghan leaders to find a ‘mutually acceptable” way to resolve the situation.

SOT, Alexei Zaitsev, Deputy Director of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Russian): “In its efforts to stabilize the situation in the region (Nagorno-Karabakh), Russia is focusing on implementing the tasks arising from these trilateral agreements, moving forward in all directions. We are continuing to work towards the release of Armenian prisoners of war in exchange for the provision of maps of the minefields. We are convinced that the early and final removal of these irritants will help to improve relations between Yerevan and Baku.”

There are reports that the sides are pulling military forces to the common border and, according to the Taliban Movement, tens of thousands of special units are deployed in the border province of Takhar in Afghanistan only. We urge Dushanbe and Kabul to search for mutually acceptable ways of resolving the current situation.”

We have already expressed our position on the cynicism and double standards we see in this decision of the European Commission, we would like to understand what will happen to this assessment now that the court has proved the illegitimacy of the Brussels-approved act of direct censorship against the media? We are also interested in whether the legality of other decisions of the Lithuanian media regulator, which prohibited, among other things, the retransmission of a number of RT group TV channels, will be examined? Or will the Lithuanian State continue to persist in its destructive course of eradicating the Russian-language media presence with the silent approval of our older European brothers?”

SOT, Alexei Zaitsev, Deputy Director of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Russian): “When we talk about stability and predictability in relations with the European Union, we are referring more broadly to the importance of restoring the priority of equal and constructive cooperation in our dialogue, aimed at realising the long-term interests of our countries and peoples. Of course, we can hardly return to business as usual in the near future - the crisis of confidence fuelled by the unfriendly steps of individual EU member states has become too severe. At the same time, we remain interested in working with the EU and its member states in a spirit of pragmatism and good neighbourliness. However, good neighbours behave correctly, respect and try to take into account each other’s legitimate interests and views. They do not allow themselves to interfere in internal affairs, to disrespect the judicial system, democratic procedures and public processes, to replicate unfounded accusations and to apply restrictive measures against each other that are illegal under international law.”

SOT, Alexei Zaitsev, Deputy Director of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Russian): “We drew attention to the arrival in Moldova on 26 September of a consignment of American military equipment worth $5 million. The goal is to increase the capacity of the Moldovan armed forces and their interoperability for participation in international peacekeeping operations. According to media reports, these are small arms, communications equipment, light artillery systems and armoured vehicles. By the end of this year, several similar deliveries from the United States have been announced. We believe that such steps, which are in line with the general policy of Washington and Brussels to draw Moldova into Euro-Atlantic structures, will hardly contribute to strengthening confidence between the banks of the Dniester River and will further complicate the already stalled Transdniestrian settlement process.”
