Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Moscow will seek firm security guarantees from Washington at the US-Russia talks in Geneva on January 10, speaking at her weekly briefing in Moscow on Thursday.
“During the negotiations, we will seek firm legal guarantees from the US side for the security of the Russian Federation, specifically that NATO will not advance eastwards and that weapons systems that threaten Russia will not be deployed near our borders,” the spokeswoman said.
She also commented that “the EU has recently been making quite a few comments on the latest Russian proposals, and, most interestingly, each time we see different statements on the subject.”
“In other words, there is no coherent, unified, consensual or if not adopted by consensus, then developed line of our Western partners within the EU, within NATO and so on. There is an absolute multitude of voices,” she stated.
Zakharova also announced that the NATO-Russian Council takes place in Brussels on January 12, and the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna on January 13. According to her, at the meetings “the Russian side will present a detailed assessment of the current intolerable military security situation in Europe.”
