Russia: New coach Karpin's contract to be renewed if squad gets through World Cup qualifiers

Head of Russian Football Federation Aleksander Duykov and new Russian national team head coach Valery Karpin commented on the latter’s recent appointment at the press conference in Moscow on Monday.

Duykov added that the new coach’ temporary contract till December 31, 2021 may be prolonged. “The contract will be automatically renewed until March 2022 if the national team gets the right to take part in the play-offs.”

Speaking of why the federation chose Karpov, Duykov highlighted his expertise.

“Today he is one of the best existing Russian experts. “Rostov” football club team plays modern football, we all know that Valery Georgievich is an excellent motivator, knows how to work with young footballers, knows the Russian championship and Russian players very well, and knows many of them personally. He knows well those he did not meet in person as well, because he studied how they play while preparing for the championship clashes. Of course, it is very important that he knows from his own experience what it feels like when the whole country is watching you,” Duykov said.

Karpin, 52, formerly played for for Spartak Moscow, Valencia, Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad. He retired as football player in 2005 and took over a managing career at Spartak and then Rostov. His predecessor Stanislav Cherchesov, 57, was appointed as national football team boss in 2016. He was criticised by Russian President Vladimir Putin after the squad did not get it into play-offs in Euro 2020.

Understanding all the complexity, I can say right away that what worried me most and worries, probably, first of all, is psychological fatigue. Not physical, of course, but psychological. I was worried if I had enough emotions for both the Rostov football club and the Russian national team. You know, probably, that I am an emotional person and I wondered if have enough emotional power. After much deliberation, I came to the conclusion that I do.”

Nevertheless, regardless of the result we agreed that in December we will review the performance of the Russian national team in this qualifying cycle and decide whether we keep working together or not.”
