The Russian Defence Ministry reported on Monday that the country’s military has conducted the first aerial target engagement by an Orion unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the skies over Crimea.
Footage shows the flight of the Orion, during which it strikes ground targets and a helicopter-type drone simulating a maneuvering aerial target.
The ministry said the Orion UAV was developed by the ‘Kronshtadt’ company as part of the ‘Inokhodets’ programme. It is the first drone of the Medium Altitude Long Endurance class.
The UAV can reach speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour, conduct an ‘intelligence’ altitude of up to 7,500 metres, execute attack missions and remain in the sky for up to 24 hours. It is armed with different types of guided missiles.
The development of Orion was ordered by the Ministry of Defense of Russia starting in 2011.
