Russia: Orthodox Christmas liturgy held in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia led the Orthodox Christmas Eve liturgy in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour during the night from Thursday to Friday.

Patriarch Kirill wished people to have good health, happiness, and to be cured of all sicknesses as well as harmony in families and peace “throughout historic territory of Ancient Rus and our Russia.”

Patriarch Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia (Russian): “My good people, I, again and again, wish you all to have peace in your soul, health, happiness, be cured of all sicknesses, harmony in family and of course peace throughout historic territory of Ancient Rus and Russia. May God’s blessing be upon us all so that through this Christmas liturgy we would enter the new year that we hope will be more peaceful and calm than the previous one. I cordially congratulate you on the Feast of the Nativity of Christ.”

Christmas liturgy commenced at 11 pm local time, but the believers started to gather several hours before that. This year people were able to attend churches freely on the condition of wearing face masks and following other coronavirus security measures.

Russian President Vladimir Putin attended Christmas liturgy at the Church of Icon of Christ Not Made by Hand in Novo-Ogarevo.

Russian Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas in accordance with the Julian calendar on January 7, 13 days later than those who use the Gregorian calendar.
